Man charged in court over fatal knife attack on woman at Notting Hill Carnival

Shakiel Thibou, 20, was originally charged with attempted murder of Cher Maximen, but is now accused of murdering her after she died of “unsurvivable” injuries on August 31.

The court heard that the 32-year-old victim had been attending the Notting Hill Carnival family day with relatives and friends on Sunday, August 25, when she was stabbed in the groin in broad daylight.

Thibou appeared at the Old Bailey on Monday via videolink from Belmarsh Prison, while his brothers Sheldon Thibou, 24, and Shaeim Thibou, 21, appeared via videolink from Wandsworth Prison to face lesser charges.

Prosecutor Alistair Richardson told the court that a fight had broken out near Ms Maximen and her group, in which the brothers were involved.

Shakiel attempted to stab a man near Ms Maximen with a “large machete-like knife,” the court heard.

The mother tried to intervene in the fight and was stabbed in the groin area, Richardson said.

She suffered cardiac arrest and was admitted to hospital where she underwent two major surgeries.

“In summary, it was found that she had significant injuries and severe blood loss,” the prosecutor said.

“These injuries proved insurmountable.”

Shakiel, of Masbro Road in Hammersmith, west London, is also charged with possession of a knife in a public place and violent disorder.

Sheldon, of Star Road in Hammersmith, and Shaeim, of Charleville Road in Fulham, south-west London, are both charged with violent disorder and assault on a paramedic. The former also faces charges of possession of a stun gun.

The three defendants were remanded in custody pending a plea and trial preparation hearing at the same court on 28 November.

The provisional trial date has been set for February 24 next year.
