Red Sox trade infielder to Mets for cash

The Boston Red Sox are just four games away from the last wildcard spot in the American League and have fewer than 20 games left in their regular season.

Boston has therefore begun to make some changes to the roster at the end of the year.

The Red Sox traded Triple-A infielder Eddy Alvarez to the New York Mets for cash on Monday, according to MLB.com's Chris Henrique.

Alvarez, 34, originally signed a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox in 2014. He was traded to the Miami Marlins in 2019 and made his debut with the team the following year. In 2022, he signed minor league contracts with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers.

The former Olympic silver medalist in short track speed skating signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox in 2023 and suffered a broken foot after just one game. In 2024, he hit a .247 batting average with an .811 OPS, 18 home runs and 77 RBIs in 114 games for Worcester.
