Unexplained cases: LKA: About 300 cold cases in Hesse

Throughout Hesse There are currently around 300 so-called cold cases. According to the Hessian State Office of Criminal Investigation, these are unsolved homicides or missing persons cases with the suspicion of a homicide, as well as other outstanding unsolved crimes.

“In general, the crimes committed in the cases investigated date back to 1980,” says LKA spokeswoman Laura Kaufmann-Conrad. However, if there are concrete indications of older cases, these will also be dealt with on an ad hoc basis.

A few years ago, the authority in Wiesbaden even set up a special department called the “Cold Case Unit” (CCU) to deal with old cases in a targeted manner. This procedure was developed together with the Frankfurt am Main Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Hessian police headquarters under the leadership of the LKA.

“In addition to the meticulous work, the ever-evolving forensic technology also contributes to cases being solved years later,” says Kaufmann-Conrad.
