Dutch inflation confirmed at 3.6%; industrial production continues to decline

AMSTERDAM (dpa-AFX) – Dutch inflation eased slightly in August, as initially expected, while industrial production continued its downward trend, according to separate reports from the Central Statistics Office on Tuesday.

Consumer prices rose 3.6 percent annually in August, after hitting a year-high 3.7 percent in July, according to preliminary data released on August 30.

Inflation based on the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) also fell as estimated from 3.5 percent in July to 3.3 percent.

The slight decline in overall inflation was mainly due to the 5.6 percent lower cost of fuel. A 3.5 percent lower price of clothing also had a dampening effect on inflation. Meanwhile, utility costs rose by 1.08 percent.

Other official data showed that industrial production fell 4.4 percent year-on-year in July, slower than the 5.0 percent decline in June. Production has been falling since July last year.

Among the industries, the transportation equipment industry recorded the largest decline in production, while the food industry recorded the largest increase.
