Audi accident in Nagpur: Police admit that son of Maharashtra BJP chief was in the car

Nagpur Audi accident: Sanket Bawankule, son of Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule, has confessed in a reckless driving case that he was in the Audi when it rammed into several vehicles, Nagpur Deputy Commissioner of Police Rahul Madane said on Tuesday.

A case has been registered against two persons, Arjun Hawre and Ronit Chittamwar, in the reckless driving case. Sanket Bawankule was summoned for questioning and confessed that he was in the car, ANI reported, citing a police official.

Police arrested the driver of Sanket Bawankule's luxury car on Monday evening. Arjun Hawre, Bawankule's driver, was later released on bail.

“The incident took place on September 9 at 12:30 am. A white Audi, registered in the name of Sanket Bawankule, was involved in the incident. We have questioned all three occupants of the car. We arrested the driver Arjun but he was later released on bail as it was a punishable offence… Their medical samples have been sent to FSL, the report is awaited,” ANI quoted DCP Zone 2 Rahul Madane as saying at a press conference.

Sanket Bawankule was returning from a beer bar in Dharampeth

According to PTI, Sanket Bawankule and the other two passengers in the Audi were returning from a beer bar in Dharampeth area. Police conducted medical examinations on the two people in the front seat after the accident.

Sanjay Raut claimed his number plate was removed after the accident

Senior police officer Rahul Madane confirmed that three people were in the car, including Sanket Bawankule. He also clarified that the number plate of the car was intact at the time of investigation. Earlier, Shiv Sena MP (UBT) Sanjay Raut had claimed on the same day that Sanket Bawankule was drunk and seriously injured two people. Raut also claimed that the number plate of the car was removed after the accident, PTI reported.

“As per our information, BJP state president Chandrashekhar Bawankule's son was allegedly drunk and seriously injured two persons in Nagpur. Surprisingly, his name was not mentioned in the First Information Report (FIR) and the number plate of the car was removed after the accident,” PTI quoted Sanjay Raut as saying on Tuesday.
