What you should know about the 2024 MTV VMAs

NEW YORK (AP) — Rapper, singer, songwriter, businesswoman, hot-girl summer purveyor and now … awards show host? Megan Thee Stallion will both host and perform at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.

It's the first time she's hosted an awards show, although she's guest hosted Saturday Night Live and co-hosted The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in the past. This time, she's guesting before her musical colleagues.

The 2024 awards ceremony promises star-studded performances, including an opening set from Eminem, plenty of moon people and even more Taylor Swift.

Here's everything you need to know about the MTV VMAs.

WHEN WILL THE MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS TAKE PLACE?

The VMAs will broadcast live from the UBS Arena on Long Island, New York on September 11 at 8 p.m. Eastern Time.

The awards ceremony was postponed by one day because of the upcoming US presidential debate. ABC News recently confirmed that the campaign teams of Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump had agreed to participate in a debate on September 10.

WHO IS NOMINATED FOR THE VMAS?

Swift leads the VMA nominations with 12 – eight for her music video “Fortnight,” two for social categories and nominations in the Artist of the Year and Best Pop categories. She is followed by her “Fortnight” collaborator Post Malone with 11 nominations. He is nominated 10 times along with Swift and received his 11th nomination for his country hit “I Had Some Help” with Morgan Wallen.

Nominees in the Artist of the Year category include Ariana Grande, Bad Bunny, Eminem, Sabrina Carpenter and SZA.

Eminem has eight nominations; Ariana Grande, Megan Thee Stallion, Sabrina Carpenter and SZA each have seven.

They are followed by Benson Boone, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, GloRilla, LISA from Blackpink, Olivia Rodrigo and Teddy Swims with four nominations each.

This year there are 29 new nominees, including Wallen, Carpenter, Swims, Boone and others.

WHO WILL PERFORM AT THE VMAS?

Eminem will open the VMAs and return to the stage for the first time in two years, singing “From the D 2 The LBC” alongside Snoop Dogg.

Artists include Perry, Boone, Carpenter, Megan Thee Stallion, Chappell Roan, GloRilla, Halsey, Lenny Kravitz, LISA, Rauw Alejandro, Anitta, Karol G, LL COOL J, Shawn Mendes, Camila Cabello and Anitta, who are accompanied by Fat Joe, DJ Khaled and Tiago PZK.

WHO WILL RECEIVE THE VIDEO VANGUARD AWARD?

Katy Perry will receive the Video Vanguard Award. She will also perform.

Previous winners include Shakira, Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna and Missy Elliott.

Perry will return to the VMAs stage for the first time since 2017, when she performed and hosted the awards show.

The pop singer has won five VMAs throughout her career, with her first three awards coming in 2011: Video of the Year (“Firework”), Best Collaboration and Best Special Effects (both for “ET” with Kanye West).

AND WHAT ABOUT THE ELECTION?

Fan voting in 15 gender-neutral categories is now open and ends on Friday.

Voting in the Best New Artist category will remain open throughout the show.

WHO IS PRESENTING AT THE VMAS?

Addison Rae, Alessandra Ambrosio, Amelia Dimoldenberg, Big Sean, Busta Rhymes, Carson Daly, Cyndi Lauper, Damiano David of Måneskin, DANNA, DJ Khaled, Fat Joe, Flavor Flav, French Montana, Halle Bailey, Jordan Chiles, Lil Nas X, Miranda Lambert, Naomi Scott, Paris Hilton, Suki Waterhouse, Thalía and Tinashe will perform at the VMAs.
