What to expect at the Flight 93 memorial service on Wednesday

Wednesday marks the 23rd anniversary of September 11. Last week, it was announced that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will appear at each of the three sites of the attacks on Wednesday, including the Flight 93 National Memorial in Somerset County.

It is still unclear when Biden and Harris will arrive at Flight 93 on Monday and what they plan to do during their visit.

6News received mixed reactions from visitors to the memorial on Monday about the couple's planned visit.

Everyone seemed to agree that it is important to remember the events of 9/11, and most had no problem with the expected visit by the nation's current leaders. However, some were overall pleased that Biden and Harris were there to commemorate the tragic events. Others were skeptical, saying they hoped it would remain a memory rather than take on a more political dimension.

As for plans for the Flight 93 memorial service, according to site spokesperson Katie Hostetler, the names of all the plane's passengers and crew will be read. After the names are read, ceremonial bells will be rung and a wreath-laying ceremony will take place later.

Hostetler adds that the longer the attacks took place, the more important it is to remember and honor this day.

“Many of us lived through 9/11 and have that memory,” Hostetler said. “But we now live in a time where one generation no longer has a living memory. So we're teaching the next generation to remember 9/11.”

Hostetler said the ceremony will begin at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday morning on Memorial Plaza at the Wall of Names.
