Stephen Colbert responds to Trump's demand that he be “punished” if he wins the election

Stephen Colbert reacted maliciously to reports that he had landed on Donald Trump’s “enemies list.”

Rolling Stone on Monday released a detailed report on Trump's 2024 presidential campaign, which included claims that the former president plans to target late-night hosts if he wins back the White House later this year.

Citing sources with direct knowledge, the magazine reported that Trump “has vented that late-night comedians should be punished for making 'illegal' campaign contributions to the Democratic Party – in the form of jokes and on-air satire.”

After he shared this part of the report in his opening monologue in Monday’s episode of The Late ShowColbert wore a fake mustache, a fake nose and glasses.

“I wonder who he's talking about,” joked Colbert, who constantly mocks Trump on his show.

After reading his name from the article, Colbert clenched his fist and shouted “Yes!” to cheers from the audience, who then chanted his name.

“I've finally made it onto an enemies list,” said the presenter happily. “Of course there's no guarantee that I'll be arrested, but it's an honor to be nominated.”

“No doubt everything will be decided this weekend in Los Angeles when the Emmy winner for best talk show is sent to a camp.”

He continued: “To my old colleague Jon Stewart, I just want to say that I voted for him. If Jon wins, of course he'll only be in jail on Mondays.”

Kimmel made a similar dig on Monday Jimmy Kimmel Live!and makes fun of Stewart, who only moderates The daily show on Monday evening.

“I'm glad you find that funny! He wants to lock up the late-night hosts?” Kimmel said as his audience laughed at the report. “How would that work for Jon Stewart? Would he only go to jail on Mondays? There's a lot to figure out.”

Speaking at the Creative Arts Emmys on Saturday, Kimmel shared a cheeky text message he sent to fellow late-night host Jimmy Fallon after news broke that NBC would cut his show from five days to four.

“As a group, we set up a text chain with all the late-night hosts and we all sent Jimmy Fallon our congratulations on his Friday off,” he said.

Kimmel appeared to address reports questioning the future of talk shows, quipping, “Late-night shows have no future.”

Late-night viewership has declined in recent years as broadcasters have been forced to implement cost-cutting measures.

“Unfortunately, that’s the reality of broadcasting and a shrinking market – streaming eats here and YouTube eats there,” Late Night with Seth MeyersEli Janney, deputy music director, commented on the budget cuts in June.
