Am I the only one who finds Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's public displays of affection pretty sweet?

It's official: The world hates love. I've suspected this for a long time – not only because of how broken the modern dating scene seems, but also because of the reaction when a happy, famous couple is photographed together in public. Usually, a series of memes, hypercritical analysis and tweets blasting the couple's style and body language follow. And of course, the intensity of the reaction will be 13,000 times greater when Taylor Swift makes up one half of the duo in question.

In case you missed it, the musician spent Sunday afternoon at the US Open with boyfriend Travis Kelce. They were completely smitten with each other. I mean cuddles: His 6-foot-5 athletic body loomed behind her, his arms wrapped around her waist. I mean kisses: sweet, giggly ones. And then there was the singing. Oh, and the dancing and air guitar playing to The Darkness' “I Believe in a Thing Called Love.” Cue a viral video that sparked so much mockery and derision online, you'd think they started having sex in their box before collapsing onto the tennis court completely naked. (They didn't!)

“Incredibly embarrassing,” one person wrote in response to the video. “Someone should tell her that she doesn't have to look so happy on camera and that it's actually a sign of a terribly deep and incurable sadness,” another (speller extraordinaire!) chimed in. Other keyboard warriors with too much time on their hands decided to call the relationship “disgusting,” and threw around the word “showmance” with care.

You get it. All of this is a huge shame for many reasons. First, Swift and Kelce are obviously very much in love—you can tell by the way they look at each other. If you can't, you may never have been looked at like that before. It's obvious that this is a real relationship, and that's exactly why they can be so deeply awkward with each other. It's the opposite of most celebrity couples, who take themselves way too seriously to even be seen holding hands in public, let alone being as silly and goofy as these two.

Honestly, it's refreshing, especially considering Swift is undeniably one of the most famous people on the planet right now. On top of that, she's long been subjected to a relentless campaign of online misogyny and slut-shaming when it comes to her love life. Her dating choices have been scrutinized to the point of parody, something she's addressed in her song lyrics more than once. With that in mind, few would blame Swift for wanting to hide her relationship with Kelce from the media. She certainly did that with her ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn. But now here she is, proudly showing the world her love.
