Chappell Roan brings medieval fashion moment to the 2024 MTV VMAs – and her own knight

Chappell Roan didn't do things by halves when preparing for her first MTV VMAs.

The 26-year-old “Good Luck, Babe!” singer showed off her epic style on the red carpet in New York on September 11 – medieval style at that. She appeared in a sheer, flowing dress by Y/Project, over which she wore a mint green cape. Underneath, she wore thigh-high boots.

Her accessories may have overshadowed the dress, however – she carried a sword and metal cuffs on each wrist, as well as a large cross necklace and other jewels. She also wore extra-long nails for added drama.

She wore her red hair in romantic curls that fell from her face and was accompanied by a knight in appropriate attire. Her glamour was dark and vampy with smoky eyes and dark red lipstick.

“Katy is a musical powerhouse and a true pop culture icon,” said Bruce Gillmer, Paramount’s president of music, musical talent, programming and events and Paramount+’s chief content officer for music, in a statement.

Roan has become known for her borderline fashion choices on stage. At this year's Governors Ball in New York, she dressed as the Statue of Liberty. She told the crowd she was “dressed up” as a monument because Lady Liberty was “the greatest queen of them all,” before quoting the poem engraved on the Statue of Liberty.

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,” she quoted part of the poem before explaining the words in her opinion, according to a video shared on TikTok by Rolling Stone.

“This means freedom for transsexuals, this means freedom for women’s rights… and it means freedom, especially, for all oppressed people in the occupied territories,” she said, visibly emotional.

The 2024 MTV VMAs will air live from the UBS Arena in New York on September 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
