John Latchem

Among the new home entertainment releases of Sept. 10 are Blu-rays of Inside Out 2, Knuckles, Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live — Season 1 and Ted: Season One, while Despicable Me 4 becomes available at regular digital pricing.

Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2, the highest-grossing animated film of all time and biggest movie of the year, arrives on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on Sept. 10. Since its June 14 theatrical release, Inside Out 2 has grossed $652 million domestically and more than $1.68 billion worldwide. The sequel returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected — new emotions. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who’ve long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up. And it looks like she’s not alone. Maya Hawke lends her voice to Anxiety, alongside Amy Poehler as Joy, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, Lewis Black as Anger, Tony Hale as Fear, and Liza Lapira as Disgust.

Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment Sept. 10 releases Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 on Blu-ray Disc, DVD and 4K Ultra HD disc. The film, directed by and starring Kevin Costner, explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won — and lost — through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure aims to take viewers on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends, and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America. The actor’s first directing effort since 2003’s Open Range, and biggest personal project since the 1990 Oscar-winning Dances With Wolves, failed to register with moviegoers, generating just $36.1 million at the global box office. The movie co-stars Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington and Giovanni Ribisi, in addition to an ensemble cast that includes Abbey Lee, Will Patton, Jena Malone, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Jeff Fahey, Isabelle Fuhrman, Ella Hunt, David O’Hara, Owen Crow Shoe, Tatanka Means, Tim Guinee, Scott Haze, Tom Payne, Alejandro Edda, James Russo, Jon Beavers, Jaime Campbell Bower and Michael Anganaro, among others.

Universal Pictures Sept. 10 releases Ted: Season One on Blu-ray Disc and DVD. The series serves as a prequel to Seth MacFarlane’s raunchy 2012 comedy Ted and its 2015 sequel, which centered on a living teddy bear (voiced by MacFarlane) 30 years after being wished to life by his childhood best friend John Bennett. The show, set in 1993, depicts Ted’s early life with the Bennetts in Massachusetts. Max Burkholder plays the teenage John, who was portrayed in the films as an adult by Mark Wahlberg. The cast also includes Alanna Ubach and Scott Grimes as John’s mother and father, and Giorgia Whigham as Blaire. MacFarlane, who reprises his role as Ted, also co-wrote and directed the season’s seven episodes.

The Criterion Collection Sept. 10 releases on 4K and Blu-ray 2023’s All of Us Strangers, director Andrew Haigh’s adaptation of the novel by Japanese writer Taichi Yamada. Isolated in a seemingly empty new high-rise, London screenwriter Adam (Andrew Scott) finds his solitary existence upended when he begins a passionate romance with the impulsive Harry (Paul Mescal), then reconnects with his parents (Jamie Bell and Claire Foy) in a reunion that pushes beyond the limits of time and space. The film is presented with a 4K digital master, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio and uncompressed stereo soundtracks. The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray combo pack includes one 4K disc of the film presented in Dolby Vision HDR, and one regular Blu-ray with the film and bonus materials.

Kino Lorber Sept. 10 releases on DVD and digitally the award-winning Mom & Dad’s Nipple Factory, a new documentary from executive producer Mayim Bialik and Emmy-winning director Justin Johnson, who goes by “Justinsuperstar.” The film follows a conservative man’s efforts to boost his wife’s morale, after she is diagnosed with breast cancer, by transforming their modest Midwest home into a secret prosthetic nipple laboratory. It’s an act of love that blossoms into a truly unexpected business, kept hidden from their church, small-town community and five unsuspecting children. Mom & Dad’s Nipple Factory was named the Audience Winner at Milwaukee Film Festival and Best of Fest at the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival, and was an Official Selection of Doclands, Heartland International Film Festival, Woods Hole Film Festival, Oak Cliff Film Festival, Port Townsend Film Festival, and Twin Cities Film Fest.

The Full Moon Entertainment action adventure sci-fi film The Primevals will be released on Blu-ray Disc Sept. 10 from MVD Entertainment Group. In the film, deep in the Himalayas, a group of Sherpas subdue and kill a towering humanoid creature. Its remains — including a brain that appears to have undergone some kind of surgery — wind up under the supervision of Dr. Claire Collier (Juliet Mills, Beyond the Door), who believes it to be one of the legendary Yeti. Joined by her former student Matt Connor (Richard Joseph Paul), a longtime believer in the creatures’ existence, big-game hunter Rondo Montana (Leon Russom, The Big Lebowski), and others, Dr. Collier leads an expedition into the mountains to track down more of the abominable snowmen. Their trek results in an encounter with a tribe of primitive hominids — which in turn leads to the far more frightening discovery of beings they never could have expected or imagined. Stop-motion FX wizard David Allen’s (Batteries Not Included, Puppet Master) long-planned passion project was shelved in the 1990s after Allen passed away from cancer. Finally completed in 2023 by Full Moon and former Allen associate Chris Endicott (Avengers: Endgame), The Primevals is a retro-fantasy adventure, employing a wild array of 100% hand-rendered, stop-motion special effects and a rich orchestral score from composer Richard Band.

With unflinching honesty, she grapples with the conflicting forces of passion and disillusionment and her own desires, fears, and insecurities, painting a raw and intimate portrait of the human heart. From writer-director Signe Baumane (Rocks in My Pockets), the film’s voice cast includes Matthew Modine (“Stranger Things,” Oppenheimer), Cameron Monaghan (Showtime’s “Shameless,” The Giver) and Stephen Lang (Avatar).

The film captures a Pryor performance shot live at the Hollywood Palladium. And though he’s the only star of the show, he’s never alone on stage. MacDonald claimed intruders killed his family, but police suspected him and in 1979 he was convicted of killing his wife, Colette, and daughters Kimberley and Kristen. He has steadfastly maintained his innocence, and has filed numerous appeals. Joe McGinniss wrote a best-selling book about the crime that was adapted for the movie. The cast of Fatal Vision includes Karl Malden, Eva Marie Saint, Barry Newman, Gary Cole and Andy Griffith. The 1974 Italian thriller The Antichrist, billed as Italy’s answer to The Exorcist, will be released on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Sept. 10 by Kino Lorber. The film, which will also be available on standard Blu-ray Disc as part of a combo pack, is being issued under Kino Lorber’s Studio Classics banner. But when placed under hypnosis, she is seized by visions of her past life as a heretic and becomes a foul-mouthed seductress with a taste for perversion that leads to her defilement by Satan himself. Mankind’s only hope is a harrowing exorcism that will either cast out the devil forever or open the door for the unspeakable birth of the antichrist. The cast also includes Mel Ferrer, Arthur Kennedy, George Coulouris, Alida Valli, Umberto Orsini and Anita Strindberg, with cinematography by Eurosleaze king Joe D’Amato and music by Ennio Morricone and Bruno Nicolai.

MVD Entertainment Group releases 88 Films’ The Golden Lotus on Blu-ray Sept. 10. Although most famous for their kung fu movies, Hong Kong’s legendary Shaw Brothers studio also made 1974’s The Golden Lotus. Taken from a (famously saucy) classic novel, the film is about a passionate — and sometimes destructive — love affair between a rich man and a poor woman. Co-starring no less than Jackie Chan in one of his earliest roles and directed by the award-winning Li Han Hsiang, Golden Lotus is an example of the diversity of Hong Kong filmmaking. The film was banned in mainland China for erotic nudity, but a groundbreaking success in Hong Kong.

MVD Entertainment Group releases 88 Films’ To Kill a Mastermind on Blu-ray Sept. 10. In the 1979 film, no-one’s safe as long as the evil kung-fu masters of the Qi Sha clan terrorize the land. Barely pausing to catch its breath between brawls, To Kill A Mastermind was produced by Hong Kong’s legendary Shaw Brothers studio and features the astounding acrobatics and mind-blowing martial arts skills that make their films so special. Long unavailable, and famously difficult to see, the film is the Shaw Brothers’ follow-up to the classic Five Deadly Venoms. Long considered lost, it’s is among the best films from Hong Kong’s Golden Era.
