Cam Rising leaves game against Baylor – Deseret News

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham did not provide an update on the severity of Cam Rising's apparent hand injury after Utah's 23-12 win over Baylor on Saturday afternoon.

“I can't give you any information about his availability at the moment,” Whittingham said. “I'm told it's not really serious. I can't give you an exact description. He could be back this week. We'll see.”

Rising, the Utes' senior quarterback and emotional leader of the offense, left Utah's game against Baylor shortly before halftime and walked to the locker room with a towel over his right hand.

Utah was in Baylor territory and kept driving, but Rising was hit near the sideline at the end of a play with 1:47 left in the half and forced out of the field. He ran into a Gatorade cooler on the Baylor sideline and appeared to be resting his hand after the play.

True freshman Isaac Wilson replaced Rising at quarterback.

Whittingham said he would reserve judgment until he “saw it on film” on whether he thought Baylor should be penalized for a late hit on the play that caused Rising to leave the game.

“I can't say because I couldn't see it well enough,” Whittingham said.

After the game, Rising went to the medical tent and was then escorted off the field.

He completed 8 of 14 passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns and also managed two runs for 21 yards before leaving the game.

Utah led 23-0 when Rising left the contest.

Wilson completed 4 of 9 passes for 30 yards and ran for minus-10 yards twice, playing all or parts of six possessions. Utah failed to score on any of those possessions, although Cole Becker missed two field goals during Wilson's time as the team's quarterback.

“He seemed a lot more relaxed and confident,” Whittingham said of Wilson compared to his time in the Week 1 win over Southern Utah. “(He) threw some good balls.”

In the second half, Rising was seen on the sidelines in civilian clothes, with the middle and ring fingers of his throwing hand taped together.

Whittingham said if the Utes need to make a change at the quarterback position next week because of Rising's injury, it will be Wilson's job.

“I have to be ready. I have to be there for my team,” Wilson said when asked when his number would be called again.
