Bills vs. Dolphins Thursday Night Football – Live Updates: Tua Tagovailoa ejected, Buffalo in command

A tough night for the Miami Dolphins and Tua Tagovailoa got even tougher.

Trailing 31-10 in the second half, Tagovailoa picked up a first down on a fourth-and-4 running play and took a hard hit to the head when the Buffalo Bills' Damar Hamlin tackled him. He will not return to the game.

The Bills have won 11 of their last 12 games against the Dolphins, and this week's opening game on Thursday Night Football is unlikely to be a repeat.

Bills running back James Cook scored three first-half touchdowns to help Buffalo take a 24-10 halftime lead in a key early-season game. Both teams made the playoffs last season and both were knocked off the field by the eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs – Miami lost in one of the coldest games in NFL history in the wild-card round in Kansas City and Buffalo lost at home the following week.

The Dolphins are without running back Raheem Mosert (chest), while De'Von Achane is active despite missing several practices due to an ankle injury. Achane scored the Dolphins' first touchdown, a five-yard catch from Tua Tagovailoa.

For the Bills, cornerback Taron Johnson (forearm) and defensive end Dawuane Smoot (toe) were ruled out for the game.

Live53 updates

  • Amazon reports that Tagovailoa is conscious and has full movement of his extremities. He is currently in the locker room with his family.

  • The Dolphins get their fourth turnover on a down attempting a fourth down. 2:02 left. It's almost over.

  • Trailing by 21 points with five minutes left in a game in which they've already lost their quarterback, the Dolphins are still banking on De'Von Achane, who missed a month last season with a knee injury, and he just made a 16-yard catch.

  • Tyler Bass misses a 45-yard field goal to put Buffalo up by 24. The Dolphins hold a 292-235 lead over the Bills, but three interceptions and a 1-for-4 record on fourth down attempts are just too much to overcome.

  • The Dolphins got the ball back and faced 4th-and-4 in their own territory, were called for a false start, and then Skylar Thompson was stopped on a scrum. It's all Bills with just under a quarter to go.

  • The punch that knocked Tua out of the game.

  • The Dolphins go for it on fourth down and Thompson slips on the dropback and then gets sacked by Von Miller. We're almost done here in every way.

  • Skylar Thompson takes over for the Dolphins at the Bills 7-yard line.

  • Tagovailoa got up and left the field without help, but with a slight limp.

  • Uh oh. The Dolphins try fourth-and-4, and Tagovailoa makes the first attempt on a scrum up the middle, but now he's on the ground clutching his helmet after colliding with, of all people, Damar Hamlin.

  • INTERCEPTION: Tua Tagovailoa gives the Bills a terrible pick-six, his third INT of the game

OH NO. This may be the worst call of Tagovailoa's career, which is saying something. He gets pressured and tries to throw the ball away, but he gets just enough air under it for Ja'Marcus Ingram to score his second interception of the game… and his first touchdown. It's 31-10 to the Bills, and it looks like it's going to be a long week in Miami.

  • The Dolphins open the second half with a stop in midfield. Josh Allen missed a deep pass on third down to Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Miami takes over on its own 11.

  • Not good for the Bills. We'll see if it matters.

  • The Bills attempt the first kick return of the game, a 25-yard kick, and no one is happier than Amazon's Al Michaels. The second half has begun.
