Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson made one of the NFL’s most impressive throws in Week 1.

After slipping on his back foot, the Colts quarterback regained his balance and threw a 55-yard pass right into the hands of Alec Pierce for a touchdown.

Despite this sensational game, Richardson could not lead the Colts to victory as they lost 29-27 to the Houston Texans earlier in the season.

Pro Football Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy joined OutKick's “Don't @ With Dan Dakich” to talk about the Colts quarterback's play in his second year.

“I think he has a chance to be really, really good if he can perfect one thing. If he starts hitting those common shots. Last week he made a couple of shots that nobody else in the league can hit, but then there are a couple where guys are free and he just has to hit the ball right on target and keep the drive going,” Dungy said.

“(Richardson) makes the spectacular play, but I always think back to something my old coach Chuck Noll told me when I came to the Steelers. We had won two Super Bowls when I got there, and he said, 'Champions don't do extraordinary things, champions do ordinary things better than anyone else.'

“For me, Anthony is making exceptional plays right now, and where he needs to improve is the normal down-in and down-out decisions and the accurate throws. If he can do that, he'll be a top-five quarterback.”

In the loss to the Texans, Richardson completed 9 of his 19 pass attempts for 212 yards and threw two touchdowns and one interception.

The former Florida Gators star player also scored 56 yards and a touchdown on six rushing attempts.

Richardson played four games last season before undergoing season-ending surgery on his injured right shoulder.

In those four games last season, Richardson completed 59.5% of his passes while establishing himself as a dual-threat quarterback by running for a touchdown in each of those games.

Richardson's shooting problems date back to his college days at Florida, where he had a 54.7% completion rate in 24 college games.

Although Richardson did not play as many games as his peers, the Colts, like Dungy, recognized Richardson's potential to become one of the league's top five quarterbacks when they selected him fourth overall in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Dungy attributes the accuracy problems in part to the small number of games played.

“Sometimes it's just a matter of timing and foresight and doing the same thing over and over again. And we have to understand that Anthony hasn't played a lot of football. Look at Bo Nix, Denver's rookie quarterback. Bo Nix played 60 college games,” Dungy said.

“Anthony is just scratching the surface, and when you look at Peyton Manning in year one, year two, year 10, year 12, you see a big difference in accuracy, timing and the little details, and that's what Anthony is going to bring. We just have to get him to play more football, do more and get those reps.”

Richardson will look to lead the Colts to their first win of the season when they face the Jordan Love-less Green Bay Packers on Sunday.
