Tate McRae imitates Britney Spears from 2001 at the 2024 VMAs

Tate McRae is officially Britney Spears' biggest fashion fan.

The 21-year-old Canadian pop star arrived at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday, September 11, wearing a black, high-neck, long-sleeve lace minidress by Roberto Cavalli that immediately reminded Spears' fans of a look the singer wore in 2001.

Underneath the sheer ensemble, McRae wore a black bra and thong by Fleur du Mal (unlike Spears, who wore boyshorts). She paired the sexy outfit with sandals by Maison Ernest and jewelry by Jacob and Co.

McRae styled her long blonde hair in loose waves courtesy of celebrity hairstylist Chad Wood, who used TRESemmé's Extra Hold Mousse for the look. McRae's smoky makeup was created using products from Stila Cosmetics, including the latest look, Stay All Day Smudge & Set Waterproof Gel Eye Liner.

The singer's Cavalli look was clearly inspired by Britney Spears' navy blue version at the 2001 MTV VMAs – the awards show where she appeared on stage with a giant yellow snake around her shoulders.

In part due to her impressive choreography during performances (McRae began her appearance on the dance competition show So you think you can dance), McRae is often compared to the 42-year-old Spears.

Speaking to PEOPLE in 2023, McRae said the comparison was “of course an honor.”

“I mean, Britney is the queen. People compare newer artists to things that happened in the past, so of course it's very cool to hear comments like that,” she continued.

At the time, McRae also shared that her music video for “Exes” was inspired by “the greats like Britney and Christina.” [Aguilera].”

McRae is nominated for two awards at this year's VMAs: Best Pop (where she competes against Camila Cabello, Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift) and Best Choreography for her music video for “Greedy” alongside choreographer Sean Bankhead.

The singer made her VMA debut in 2020, when she was nominated for Best New Artist (Doja Cat won the award). Her second studio album, Think laterwas released in 2023 and contains the singles “Greedy” and “Exes”.

After months of romance rumors, McRae and singer The Kid LAROI made their relationship official on Instagram in July 2024. In August, 21-year-old LAROI performed a duet with the star at Madison Square Garden as part of her Think Later Tour.

The 2024 VMAs will be hosted by Megan Thee Stallion. The “Mamushi” rapper is nominated for five awards, including best collaboration for “Wanna Be” with GloRilla, as well as best hip hop, best visual effects, best direction and best art direction for “Boa.”

During the show at the UBS Arena, audiences can enjoy performances by Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Camila Cabello, GloRilla and Rauw Alejandro. All except Cabello, who returns for a third performance from her latest studio album, C,XOXOwill make their debut on the main stage.

The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Wednesday, September 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
