Solheim Cup 2024: Charley Hull and Esther Henseleit lead Team Europe in the foursome against Team USA on Friday | Golf News

England's Charley Hull will begin the European national team's attempt to write more Solheim Cup history when she plays in the opening match of Friday's foursome alongside newcomer Esther Henseleit.

Hull will be competing for Team Europe for the seventh consecutive year as Suzann Pettersen's side aim for an unprecedented 'quadruple win' after defending the trophy in dramatic fashion last year following two consecutive victories in 2019 and 2021.

The world number 10 will compete alongside Henseleit, who qualified after winning Olympic silver in Paris and finishing second at the ISPS Handa Women's Scottish Open a week later. The pair will face world number one Nelly Korda and Allisen Corpuz at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club at 7:05am local time (12:05pm BST).

Before Charley Hull takes part in the Solheim Cup for the seventh year in a row, we take a look at the best footage from her past performances for Team Europe.

Korda and Corpuz formed an impressive team during the 2023 competition in Spain, winning their opening foursome as part of a session sweep for Team USA on day one. Both will hope to help the United States to its first Solheim Cup success since 2017.

Céline Boutier, the top-ranked player on the European team, has been partnered with another Solheim Cup debutant, Albane Valenzuela. The pair will face Rose Zhang and Lauren Coughlin in the second match of the session at 7:17am (12:17pm BST).

Emily Pedersen and Maja Stark played together in a foursome at Finca Cortesin last year, but will appear as a foursome partnership on opening morning, facing Ally Ewing – who is taking part in her fourth consecutive Solheim Cup – and Jennifer Kupcho.

Experienced European champion Carlota Ciganda maintained a 100 percent record last time out on home soil and will team up with Sweden's Linn Grant in the foursome on Friday when they face world number two Lilia Vu and debutant Sarah Schmelzel.

We take a trip through the archives to look back at some of the best shots in Solheim Cup history.

Leona Maguire sits out a session for the first time in her Solheim Cup career after posting a best score of 4.5 points on her debut in 2021 and three points in 2023, while Georgia Hall, Anna Nordqvist and Madelene Sagstrom are the other three not used by Pettersen.

The four Americans missing from Stacy Lewis's lineup Friday morning are Megan Khang, Alison Lee, Andrea Lee and Lexi Thompson – the only Team USA player on her team who was on her last win in 2017.

How does the format work and what happens next?

Over the three days, 28 matches are played in three different formats – foursomes, fourball and singles, with each match contributing one point towards the team score. In foursomes, two golfers from Europe compete against a pair from the USA, with team members taking turns to hit the ball and each team using one ball.

Fourballs action is scheduled to begin at 12.05pm (5.05pm BST) on Friday and Saturday, with 15 minutes between each match. Fourballs also sees two golfers from each team compete against each other with their own ball. The lowest score from each pair counts towards their side's score.

In the Sky Sports Golf Podcast, Sophie Walker tells us all about the newcomers to the European Solheim Cup team – Esther Henseleit and Albane Valenzuela.

The starting times for Saturday's foursomes matches will be the same as Friday's, while all 24 players will then take part in Sunday's singles. The first singles match will start at 1:50pm on Sunday and the last of the 12 matches is scheduled to start at 3:40pm BST.

The team that scores 14.5 points or more over the three days wins the Solheim Cup, while Europe will retain the trophy again if the tournament ends in a 14-14 tie.
