“Longtime Michigan administrator Greg Harden went to the hospital for a procedure on Monday and remained there due to complications. Please keep Greg and his family in mind and in prayer. We ask that everyone respect their need for privacy during this time,” Michigan Athletics said in a statement.

Greg Harden's role in Michigan's athletic department generally involved working behind the scenes. As the assistant athletic director overseeing the health and welfare of athletes for nearly 25 years, Harden helped some of the best athletes Ann Arbor produced reach their peaks. He first joined the staff in 1986. He worked with the Wolverines for 24 years and officially retired in 2019.

Out of Jalen Rose To Tom Brady To Michael Phelps — and countless Wolverines in between — Harden has helped countless athletes train their minds as much as their bodies. And many of the athletes and coaches he has mentored give rave reviews about how Harden has helped them elevate their performance.

“If Greg Harden wasn’t at the University of Michigan, I wouldn’t have won the Heisman,” former Michigan wide receiver and 1991 Heisman winner Desmond Howard he said in a clip used to promote Harden's book.

Finally, Harden's work gained attention when he was profiled on 60 Minutes in 2014 and his work was described as “Michigan's secret weapon” for athletic success.

He also recently published his above-mentioned book, Staying Sane in a Crazy World: How to Control the Controllable and Succeedwhich first hit shelves in August 2023.

Although Harden officially resigned from his position at the university in 2019, he remains closely involved with the various programs at Michigan and works as a consultant for the athletic department. He began his career working blue-collar jobs in the Detroit area before moving into counseling and working for a drug treatment program. He eventually earned his master's degree in social work from Michigan while working as a clinical therapist. Shortly after Harden earned his master's degree, he was hired by Bo Schembechler to work with the Michigan football team, and the rest is history for Harden.
