England vs Australia: Men's T20 cricket second international match – live | England national cricket team

Important events

5th over: Australia 53-1 (Short 19, Fraser-McGurk 1) Carse charges Fraser-McGurk and then beats Short for pace. It's a terrific first over: two runs and a huge wicket.

“To speed up England's T20 internationals,” begins Kevin Wilson, “can we just let the opposition start at 72-0 in the powerplay and then England can actually turn things around?”

72 for onePlease.

WICKET! Australia 52-1 (Head c Rashid b Carse 31)

Brydon Carse replaces Topley, who misses a chance at a run-out at short fine leg, with Head well short. It doesn't matter, as Head hits the next ball straight to Rashid at cover point, ending another brutal short-form performance of 31 off 14 balls. Carse, back in the team for the first time since his suspension, struck with his second ball.

4th over: Australia 51-0 (Short 19, Head 31) Head does an excellent job of pulling a difficult short ball from Mahmood around the corner for four; then a helicopter shot from distance tempts him before landing too short.

I swear Mahmood bowls well but he still goes to the end. Short hits a big drive over the slips for four, misses a slower cutter and bowls another short ball for a single. Head backs off to hit the last delivery over short third for four; he is the most notable player, scoring 31 off 13 balls.

3rd over: Australia 37-0 (Short 14, Head 22) Topley's first ball is headchecked over long-on for a fantastic six, holding the pose at the end of his backswing. A well-aimed steer over short third takes him into the twenties after just eight balls. Once again Topley ends the over pretty well, with just one run from the last four deliveries, but overall it was another great start for Australia.

You know it's coming, I know it's coming.

2nd over: Australia 26-0 (Short 14, Head 11) Saqib Mahmood has the dubious privilege of bowling to Travis Head. It's a really good first over – and yet it goes for 11. Mahmood bowled a spandex-tight line, giving Head little chance to free his arms. A top-edge pull flew over short fine leg for four, then Head smacked a long-tossed ball across the ground for six. The straight boundaries are very short at Sophia Gardens.

1st Over: Australia 15-0 (Short 14, Head 0) Reece Topley's first over disappears for 15. It started promisingly for England when Short survived a huge LBW appeal when an inswinger bowled just outside leg. Then, after a leg-side wide, it got stuck into Topley. Short took six from the ground, blasted four over the head of the little third man and hit another boundary through mid-off. It could have been worse for England; Topley finished the over with consecutive dot balls.

It's a beautiful, sunny evening in Cardiff. Travis Head, captain of the Australian national team for the first time, will (potentially) crush England in every way.

“I guess this is all just a bit of fun at the end of the season/shameless money-maker (delete as appropriate), so we'll just take it,” says Guy Hornsby. “But it seems very odd to continue to use Jamie Overton as a No. 7 batsman. He's really talented but if the top three fail, at least we look like the better short and that hurt us in the first game. Penny for other No. 6s/7s floating around the lap of time. Who would you bring in? But what do I know!”

I like Overton there because it's such a specialised position and England have really struggled to find someone, so I think he's worth a look.

England wins the coin toss and the bowl

Travis Head, standing in for the ill Mitch Marsh, calls wrong and is told by Phil Salt to bat first. He is a brave man.

There was a bright spot for England in their first T20 international, a great all-round performance from Liam Livingstone. Here's what he made of it.

preamble

And now to Cardiff, where England must win to keep the T20 series against Australia alive. Not that this little piece of bilateral goodness is about winning and losing; it's about… well, whatever you want.

For many, the most interesting aspect is the inclusion of young players on both sides: Jordan Cox, Jacob Bethell, Xavier Bartlett and perhaps Cooper Connolly.

It's also another chance to watch the amazing Travis Head, whose tumultuous 59 in 23 balls decided Wednesday's match in the first six overs. And even if it's watered down, it's still England versus Australia. There are, and always will be, worse ways to spend a Friday night.
