Amber Portwood tells how she dealt with the disappearance of her then fiancé Gary Wayt

Amber Portwood reveals the aftermath of her ex-fiancé's disappearance in June.

In a preview of the season finale of Teen Mom: Next Chapter, Maci Bookout McKinney went to Amber's aid after her then-fiancé Gary Wayt disappeared from their North Carolina location on June 9, 2024. In the clip, Maci called her colleague Catelynn Baltierra to update her on Amber's condition.

“Amber is inside,” Maci said by phone. “If you just see the condition she's in right now, it's unbelievable. It's so bad and I feel so bad for her. We called the police chief today and he basically said, 'You've done everything you can to help us here, but you just need to go home and rest.'”

“I don't think she's in any shape to drive,” Maci continued. “I'm driving her to Knoxville because that's on her way home, and then MTV is driving her the rest of the way.”

Catelynn then said to Maci, “I love you guys,” before hanging up. The next scene showed Maci in the car and Amber climbing into the passenger seat. “It's okay, baby,” Maci said as the 16 and pregnant Alum began to sob.

“For so many days I just didn’t know if he was alive or not,” Amber told Maci through tears.

“But he is,” Maci reassured her, referring to reports that Wayt had been sighted that day.

“Knowing he was in New Mexico at 1 a.m. makes me feel so much better,” Amber continued.

Just days after filming this episode, Wayt was found safe and sound in Oklahoma, 900 miles from where he first went missing.

“Gary Wayt has been located,” Bryson City, North Carolina police wrote on Facebook on June 14. “No further information is available at this time.”

On June 11, Amber filed a missing person report after Wayt never returned from her hotel in North Carolina after being away for two days. She claimed at the time that they had a “discussion” that evening, but that it was “not a big fight or anything.”

“Nobody was upset or anything, it was emotional because it had something to do with his parents being Vietnamese and me being who I am,” Amber said in a YouTube livestream. “He was very upset about it, I was upset. We don't yell at each other, we don't hurt each other.”

“We are very much in love. This man asked me if I wanted to be with him and then this man asked me if I wanted to marry him,” she added.

She said Wayt then took off with his keys and wallet, but left his phone behind and never came back. Amber called the situation “a big deal” and expressed her concern for Wayt.

“His parents, everyone is very worried. I'm worried,” she said on YouTube. “We are very scared right now.”

A week after he was found by police, Wayt and the reality star called off their engagement.
