Tigers players Brieske and Hurter pitch a no-hitter in 8 innings against the Orioles

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit pitchers Beau Brieske, Brant Hurter and Brenan Hanifee combined for eight innings to throw a no-hitter against the Baltimore Orioles, striking out 21 batters in a row before Adley Rutschman issued an eight-pitch walk in the eighth inning on Friday night.

Detroit took a 1-0 lead thanks to Kerry Carpenter's home run in the first inning.

Brieske, a 26-year-old right-hander, was scheduled to start as the opening hitter and struck out four batters while throwing 11 of 16 pitches for strikes.

Hunter, a 26-year-old rookie left-hander, struck out eight players in 5 2/3 innings and turned 53 of 71 pitches into strikes. He started 17 of 18 batters with strikes, including his first 14.

Hanifee, a 26-year-old rookie right-hander who was relieved after Rutschman's walk, finished the next two outs with a strikeout and a forceout and then struck out Colton Cowser.

Baltimore came closest to a hit when Ryan O'Hearn hit a soft line drive down the left field line in the fifth inning that was just inches from the field.
