Rangers give Chris Young new contract and title after 4 years as GM

ARLINGTON, Texas – Chris Young has received a contract extension and a new title with the Texas Rangers after serving as general manager for nearly four years, including overseeing his hometown team's first World Series title.

The Rangers announced a multi-year contract extension for Young and his promotion to president of baseball operations on Friday.

Young was hired as general manager in December 2020 and took over as head of the team's baseball operations group in August 2022. The Rangers were World Series champions last year but were 7½ games back in both the American League West and the wild-card race with 15 games to play entering Friday night's game in Seattle.

The 45-year-old Young's original four-year contract would have expired after this season.

“His leadership and vision were instrumental in Arlington winning its first World Series, and he is passionate about bringing consistent winners on the field to our fans year after year,” said Ray Davis, the team's majority owner and managing partner.

The team did not disclose details of the contract extension or say whether there will be other changes to baseball operations, such as hiring a new general manager.

Young was already GM and did not receive a title change two years ago when he assumed oversight of all areas of the team's baseball operations department following the firing of Jon Daniels.

Daniels was 28 when he was named general manager in October 2005, and the Rangers made their first World Series appearances in 2010 and 2011. He was given the title of president of baseball operations in 2013 and held both positions until Young was hired.

Before becoming general manager of the Rangers, Young spent three years in Major League Baseball's baseball operations department from 2018 to 2020. He played 13 seasons for five major teams, the first two with the Rangers, after the 6-foot-10, two-sport standout grew up in Dallas and played baseball and basketball at Princeton.

“The Texas Rangers organization is very special to me and I look forward to building on what we have started here,” Young said. “While the opportunity to be part of a World Series championship in my hometown was a tremendous thrill, our goal is to build a club that can compete for playoff spots every season.”

Young is the first person to win the World Series as a player (with Kansas City in 2015) and as a general manager since Johnny Murphy pitched on seven championship teams with the New York Yankees from 1932 to 1943 and was GM of the New York Mets when they won the title in 1969.
