MP Mark Green's wife accuses him of having an affair

The wife of the chairman of the influential House Homeland Security Committee said he filed for divorce last month after having an affair with a younger woman, The Washington Post has learned.

Camilla “Camie Green accused her husband, Rep. Mark Green (R-Tenn.), of having “an affair with a 32-year-old woman” in a group message sent to other lawmakers on Wednesday that was reviewed by The Post.

Green's wife claimed the other woman, whom she did not name, was employed by the political news channel Axios. However, according to a cease-and-desist letter obtained by The Washington Post, Axios's in-house counsel called that claim “false and inherently defamatory.”

“Your message not only caused this reporter significant emotional distress, but also damaged her professional reputation,” Axios content consultant Brian Westley wrote to Camie Green.

“We therefore insist that you immediately set the record straight by sending the group a short follow-up text stating: 'I made a mistake when I wrote that Mark had an affair with a woman who works at Axios. This is not true, and I apologize for the distress and harm I have caused to anyone who may have been affected by my message.'”

Camilla Green later told Politico: “I want to set the record straight because I misidentified someone in that post. My husband never had a relationship with an Axios reporter and I regret saying that.”

“It's no secret that Mark is going through a personal situation and I want to respect his privacy, but to ensure there is no collateral damage, I want to make sure people know that any rumors or allegations of a relationship with a female reporter are absolutely false,” the mystery woman also explained to the outlet.

In a separate statement, 59-year-old Mark Green confirmed: “This is a difficult time for my family and me, and we are currently going through divorce proceedings. As this is a very private matter, I ask for privacy. I will continue to serve this district with everything I have, just as I have for the past five and a half years.”

“I offered reconciliation, but he wants nothing to do with it and is insisting on a divorce,” Camie Green said in the message, which a congressional staffer told The Washington Post was also emailed to Capitol offices.

“Satan has rewritten our marriage in his mind. I am speaking openly about this because 1) I appreciate the prayers of anyone who is willing to pray, and 2) I want to make others aware of how easy it is for our husbands to become 'predators,'” she added.

“If my story can prevent someone else from experiencing this tragedy, I will tell it..

Camie Green's letter goes on to say how lawmakers in Washington can “become intoxicated by power and worship” while serving away from their families. She writes that her husband “pushed God out of his life, me out of his life, and made friends with other members of Congress who were having affairs and getting divorced and drinking and partying – all while he hosted a weekly Bible study in the basement of our house.”

“I still pray for him and hope that God will work in his heart, but my hope is fading. He no longer wears his wedding ring and his will is engraved,” lamented the congressman's wife.

Green, an Army veteran trained as a surgeon, was elected to Congress in 2018 after serving nearly six full years in the Tennessee Senate. He and Camie have been married since 1989 and have two adult children.

As chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, Green is the Republicans' primary attack dog in the House against the Harris-Biden administration over the ongoing border crisis.

However, on Valentine's Day this year, he announced that he would not run for another term, only to reverse his decision 15 days later.

In the general election on November 5, Green will face Democrat Megan Barry, the former mayor of Nashville.
