Jane's Addiction ends show after argument between Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro on stage

Jane's Addiction's 35-year-plus odyssey took another incredible turn last night (Sept. 13) in Boston when the group ended their show early after frontman Perry Farrell attacked guitarist Dave Navarro onstage. Farrell, 65, was restrained by crew members and bassist Eric Avery, whose participation in the band's current tour after a 14-year hiatus was a major selling point for fans.

Farrell's lackluster performances at two outdoor shows in New York earlier this week drew the ire of social media commentators who speculated whether he was battling drug or alcohol problems. During the first performance on Tuesday, he confessed: “Ladies and gentlemen, I have to be honest with you. There's something wrong with my voice. I can't get the notes out all of a sudden.” Avery later wrote on Instagram: “Looking forward to giving it another go tonight at this spectacular rooftop venue. I'm optimistic we'll get better.”

Last night at Leader Bank Pavilion, things were even worse, as Farrell yelled at Navarro during the show's ninth song, “Mountain Song,” and tensions rose even further during the subsequent performance of “Three Days.” Afterward, in the middle of “Ocean Size,” Farrell walked up to Navarro, aggressively shoved him, and then appeared to swing at him. Jane's Addiction is scheduled to perform in Bridgeport, Connecticut tomorrow, but has not yet commented on the incident or the future of the band, which has split and reunited several times since its original breakup in 1991.

A May 23 performance at the 400-capacity Bush Hall in London saw Jane's play with Navarro for the first time since 2021, completing the original lineup of Farrell, Avery and drummer Stephen Perkins. Navarro was absent due to symptoms of long COVID and has been replaced on tour in recent years by former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist/Pearl Jam multi-instrumentalist Josh Klinghoffer and Queens of the Stone Age's Troy Van Leeuwen.

Jane's have also been recording new music. The recently released “Imminent Redemption” is the first new track from the original lineup since the 1990s. Ritual De Lo Habitual.
