Current recall of macaroni and cheese after FDA sets risk level

The FDA has ordered a recall of a number of macaroni and cheese products.

As part of a voluntary campaign by the manufacturer Reser's Fine Foods, two varieties of the product were recalled.

The ongoing recall was initiated due to concerns that the product had been spoiled by temperature abuse, which was caused by a malfunction of a refrigeration unit on a trailer.

The product recalls were classified as risk class II. The FDA defines this as “a situation in which use of or exposure to an unlawful product may result in temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, or the likelihood of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

More than a dozen food products were recalled in August, according to the FDA and the Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service. The recalls covered a range of products, including desserts, condiments and infant formula, federal agencies reported. Most of the recalls were due to undeclared allergens, while others were related to possible bacteria or lead contamination.

People are advised not to consume the recalled products. Allergy sufferers should take precautions.

This week, the FDA issued additional recalls. Bags of Brazil nuts were recalled across the United States due to mold and yeast contamination and classified as Class II.

A kimchi product was also classified in risk class II after it was found to have a high level of yeast contamination.

Due to fears of listeria contamination, a number of guacamole and salsa products have been classified as a Class I risk.
