CHICAGO (WLS) — The city has developed plans to protect crowds and manage traffic, including a first-of-its-kind festival in Grant Park.

On Friday, Chicago police officers were seen stationed throughout the city, from State and Lake to Soldier Field.

In addition, municipal snow removal vehicles are on standby to close streets if necessary.

This comes as the first family-friendly El Grito Festival is set to begin in Grant Park on Saturday.

Festival organizers hope that a centralized celebration will avoid traffic congestion in the Loop, as well as car convoys and street parties.

The president of the Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce expressed confidence that the festival would help ease congestion in the Loop.

Ald. Brian Hopkins, who represents the 2nd District, said the city is responding proactively to keep celebrations in check.

The Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications and Chicago Police have developed a plan to restrict access to downtown if necessary, including rolling street closures, access points for residents and those working in the Loop, and ensuring streets remain open for first responders.

Rolling road closures may occur in the areas shown below. People who live or work in the city centre are asked to carry identification to be allowed through.

Chicago police will use helicopters to monitor the festivities from the air.

Both the festival organizers and the city administration are urging all revelers this weekend to use public transportation to avoid problems on the streets.

The El Grito Festival starts on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
