CPL 2024: Hinds' last-gasp 6 gives Trinbago dramatic win over Barbados

Terrance Hinds hit a six off the penultimate ball to give the Trinbago Knight Riders a thrilling two-wicket victory over the previously unbeaten Barbados Royals in the 15th match of the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) at Kensington Oval on Friday evening.

Chasing 157 and needing 11 runs off the last over, the Knight Riders looked to be in trouble when Akeal Hosein hit 20 runs off the third delivery, needing six more. But after Jason Holder bowled a waist-high full toss, Hinds hit a six off the free hit to secure victory, leaving them unbeaten on 14 runs from five balls.

With the win, the Knight Riders drew level with the Royals; both teams now have a record of 3-1.

Earlier, the Royals had scored 156 runs for seven in their 20 overs, thanks to an unbeaten 59 runs from captain Rovman Powell. The Royals struggled to cope with the Knight Riders' spin attack, with Waqar Salamkheil taking three wickets for just 13 runs, including the crucial dismissal of Quinton de Kock for 39 runs.

The Royals got off to a disastrous start when opener Rahkeem Cornwall scored his third consecutive no-over, falling off the second ball of the innings. Hosein struck again two balls later, taking Alick Athanaze out for no-over.

De Kock and Rivaldo Clarke consolidated their performance before the South African was bowled out by a perfect googly from Waqar Salamkheil, stopping the Royals, who soon lost Holder for a walkover.

The Royals struggled with boundaries in the middle overs before David Miller (19 off 13 balls) hit a massive sixer off Hosein over extra cover in the 13th over. Miller's cameo was ended by Salamkheil, who finished with a superb three for 13.

Powell had little to do with batting before taking the lead with a series of sixes, including off-seamer Jayden Seales in the last over, and reaching his half-century in style.

The Knight Riders, who had devised a strategy to chase dewy weather, got off to a similarly poor start when Sunil Narine hit a hole-in to spinner Maheesh Theekshana on the first ball.

Opener Jason Roy started with a couple of glorious drives before being tricked by Theekshana at nine runs, leaving the contest in a tricky situation. After a brief rain delay, Shaqkere Parris was dismissed by Holder off Theekshana at nine runs as Nicholas Pooran took control and steadied the Knight Riders.

But Pooran's easy 35 in 23 balls ended with a spectacular double strike in the deep as Powell caught the ball and flicked it to Holder just before he crossed the boundary.

Parris got some support from Keacy Carty as the Knight Riders seemed to be on course, needing 51 off 36 balls. The reinstatement of Theekshana in the 15th over did its utmost as he tricked Parris into a mishit, triggering a Knight Riders collapse. Parris made 35 off 40 balls.

The game was supposed to end in a thrilling fashion, but Hinds' last-minute heroic effort silenced the home crowd and secured victory for the Knight Riders.

Final results:
Barbados Royals 156-7 (20/20); Trinbago Knight Riders 159-8 (19.5/20 overs).
