Johno makes history: Kings beat Patriots

The Saint Lucia Kings returned to winning ways with a five-wicket victory over the Saint Kitts & Nevis Patriots on September 12, in their third Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) match at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground, with the home team needing a win after their first two defeats.

After winning the toss, the Kings elected to bowl first and managed to keep the score under control despite failing to take a wicket during the powerplay. A solid 62 from former King Andre Fletcher and a brisk 50 from Riley Rossouw helped the Patriots to a total of 173-5, about average for this venue.

The Kings' reply started explosively, with captain Faf Du Plessis and Johnson Charles scoring 72 runs by the end of the powerplay. Both openers scored over 50 to form an impressive partnership of 115 runs. During his innings, Charles (74 off 42 balls) also made history by becoming the first player in CPL history to cross the 3000-run mark. Contributions from the middle order then secured the team's victory.

Man of the match Charles said he was happy with his team's performance, although there was still room for improvement.

“I wouldn't say it's complete because you never have a complete game. There's always room for improvement. So it was a very comprehensive win and I'm happy about it,” he said.

Commenting on his personal milestone, the two-time World T20 winner from Millet said he was very happy with the achievement.

“This is a great achievement, I am delighted with it. I am the only one in the 3000 club, my brother will soon join me. [Andre] Fletcher. But it's a wonderful feeling, a great milestone. And I just want to make more runs,” he added.

The Boys in Blue will be hoping for a win against the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons on Sunday night to finish their home game of the tournament on a winning note.
