These streets will be closed for the Mexican Independence Day parade in Brooklyn

NEW YORK (PIX11) – Mexican Independence Day is just around the corner and New York City is celebrating it with a parade in Brooklyn on Sunday, September 16.

The celebrations are held in honor of Father Miguel Hidalgo y Castilla, who gave a speech calling on his followers to revolt against the Spanish who ruled Mexico at the time. According to the History Channel, September 16th celebrates the uprising that sparked a ten-year war that eventually led to Mexican independence.
