Mexican Independence Day in NYC: Guide to Street Closures

Mexican Independence Day celebrations in New York City will kick off with a colorful parade in Brooklyn on Sunday before the official holiday begins on Monday.

The parade will honor Father Miguel Hidalgo y Castilla, who sparked Mexico's struggle for independence with his famous call to arms against Spanish rule.

When is Mexican Independence Day?

September 16 marks the anniversary of the uprising that sparked a ten-year war that led to the liberation of Mexico.

The parade takes place from 12 to 4 p.m.

The following streets will be closed on Sunday due to the Mexican Independence Parade.

Education:

  • 59th Street between 5th Avenue and 6th Avenue

Route:

  • 5th Avenue between 41st Street and 59th Street

Distraction:

  • 5th Avenue between 41st Street and 43rd Street
