Justin Herbert scores two touchdowns with Quentin Johnston

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Wide receiver Quentin Johnston gave the Chargers their first touchdown on Sunday, out-hitting Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn with a 29-yard touchdown pass on a throw from Justin Herbert. Johnston adjusted the pass in the air to keep the ball away from Horn's outstretched arms.

It was Johnston's third career touchdown and the first with a ball thrown 20 yards or more.

Johnston, the Chargers' first-round pick last season, struggled in his first year, finishing with a 6% drop rate, the highest of any rookies with at least 50 targets. His four drops were the fourth-highest among rookies.

Johnston scored again in the second quarter, catching a five-yard pass from Herbert. Johnston had a free hand in the back of the end zone in what looked like a failed coverage by the Carolina defense. He had three pass catches for 37 yards on the day.
