Live updates: Lions getting ball back in tight game with Bucs in fourth quarter

Fourth quarter

5:12 — Detroit Lions drive starts on own 18

7:34 — Tampa Bay Buccaneers drive starts on own 26

Mayfield back to the Evans well on first down to open the drive, another solid gain, 10 yards to move the chains.

Mayfield avoids a sack, flips it to his tight end, still going the wrong way. It’s third-and-12 — McMillan wanted a flag, doesn’t get one, defense holds.

Lions LB Alex Anzalone is being evaluated for a concussion.

9:57 — Detroit Lions drive starts on own 48

Goff continues to flirt with disaster, another near-interception. Third-and-4 at Tampa’s 46-yard line — Gibbs to the rescue, 24-yard gain, multiple broken tackles. Huge play. Second-and-16 after holding on Frank Ragnow, tough break, was about to be third-and-short. Goff gets hammered, throws an easy interception over the middle, tough, tough swing after getting away with one.

Great return by Kalif Raymond.

12:53 — Tampa Bay Buccaneers drive starts on own 9

Mayfield to Evans, too much cushion from Arnold, and that’s a 15-yard gain. Jack Campbell engulfs Bucky Irving for no gain on the next play, check that, loss of 1 yard. Irving gets another look, makes it third-and-manageable here. Lions need that ball back. Third-and-2 — Hutchinson has his fifth sack, fourth on third down.

Lions open with first-and-10 on own 41-yard line

Bucs forget about David Montgomery, who moves the chains and the ball into Tampa territory. Nice 15-yard gain for the running back to open the final quarter. Third-and-7 after two runs by Montgomery are held in check.

Ball hits the ground on third down, some handsy coverage, but the pass was low, potentially too low there. Tough break.

Third quarter

:34 — Detroit Lions drive starts on own 30

Bucs neutral-zone infraction moves the chains to end the third quarter.

3:26 — Tampa Bay Buccaneers drive starts on own 30

Terrion Arnold hit with a facemask penalty on the first play, and the Bucs have it first-and-10 at midfield. Mayfield has all day, finds rookie Jalen McMillan for 22 yards. After a 6-yard end-around sweep, it’s second-and-4 at Detroit’s 22-yard line. Third-and-4 after an ill-fated tight end screen — crowd is bumping, Mayfield remains slippery, breaks a tackle and makes it first-and-10 at the 11.

Mayfield runs around, makes a couple guys miss on the draw, and scores. Bucs 20, Lions 16

9:33 — Detroit Lions drive starts on own 32

Two ugly throws for St. Brown, and it’s third-and-10. Goff hits Jameson Williams, who breaks a tackle, and does enough to keep this drive alive. You have to love seeing that in the intermediate game from No. 9.

Gibbs breaking multiple tackles on his way to a big gain for another first down. Great run, great effort. First-and-10 at Tampa’s 32-yard line.

Third-and-4 — Goff to a wide-open LaPorta keeps the drive alive. Lions are looking smooth on third-down on this very crucial possession. Another third down coming up after the pass in the flats to Gibbs, third-and-8 — St. Brown first down, nearly scores, and the Sun God is limping clearly after that 17-yard catch. And he goes down with the trainers coming out. St. Brown off the field on his own power, jogging off, so a good sign. He remains close to the sideline behind Dan Campbell with is helmet on.

First-and-goal at the 1-yard line — Montgomery, who else, punches it in. Lions fight back into the lead here late in the third quarter. Lions 16, Bucs 13

Bucs Vita Vea (knee) is out for the rest of the game — big loss for the Bucs.

11:53 — Tampa Bay Buccaneers drive starts on own 30

Hutchinson sack counter — four in 35 minutes, another on third down, his third on that down. Lions defense forces the punt.

14:54 — Detroit Lions drive starts on own 30

Offense isn’t have a great day. But a positive has been the Goff-St. Brown connection. Big gain moves the chains, and roughing the passer brings the Lions to Tampa’s 35-yard line just like that.

Jameson Williams end-around for 15 yards, and the offense is cruising. It’s third-and-6 after two short gains, though. Goff in the shotgun with Montgomery, and it goes back to the running back short of the sticks. Lions will settle for a field goal — it’s good. Bucs 13, Lions 9

Tom Kennedy gets another chance, gets the offense back to the 30-yard line on the return. Nice to see the Lions get an opportunity on that phase.

HALFTIME: Tampa Bay Buccaneers 13, Detroit Lions 6

Second quarter

1:52 — Detroit Lions drive starts on own 44

David Montgomery 9-yard rush, nice way to start this drive. Lions get the ball to open the second half, so getting points here would be large. Goff to St. Brown, who adds more after the catch, moves the chains to take the offense to Tampa’s 38-yard line.

Tim Patrick moves the chains on his first catch with the team. Patrick got open, planted, and secured the first down, 10-yard reception. Lions take a timeout with 49 seconds left on the clock. Third-and-short after Goff keeps it himself, Lions take their final timeout with 28 seconds left. Third-and-2 — Goff keeps it again, moves the chains. They’ll take it.

Wow. Offense, out of timeouts, tried to spike it after St. Brown was stopped inbounds. Before they snapped the ball, the kicking team ran on the field, leading to a 10-second runoff and no points to end the half.

5:02 — Tampa Bay Buccaneers drive starts on own 13

Mayfield saw Robertson coming on the slot blitz, and fired as quickly as possible to Godwin for a first down. Veteran wideout is stuffing the box score.

Mayfield took a hard shot before the two-minute warning. Big play after the break in action, third-and-7 at Tampa’s 45-yard line. Here we go — Brian Branch interception, one heck of a play to come down with that ball. Seriously, he’s a stud.

9:04 — Detroit Lions drive starts on own 22

Three-and-out. But guess what? Jack Fox fake-punt pass to Sione Vaki moves the chains. Easy business, great design. Took some guts, Fox threw that from his own 6-yard line. Third-and-2, Lions take the most difficult route possible, deep attempt to St. Brown along sideline hits the ground.

Fourth-and-2, offense staying out there, Montgomery takes the handoff, moves the chains. Running back was not stopping before crossing the markers, took some guts from Tampa territory, but no still no surprise.

Goff throws an ugly one while taking a hit, and is gifted a present from above, with Whitehead dropping the interception. St. Brown can’t corral the tough look, see if the Lions punt away on fourth down.

Tom Kennedy fields the first return for the Lions under the new rules, and their 8 yards short of the touchback spot. Solid kick by the Bucs on that one, for the record.

12:47 — Tampa Bay Buccaneers drive starts on own 30

Derrick Barnes remains everywhere, all over the first-and-10 play, and the Lions are all over the second-and-10 play. No gain on both snaps, third-and-10. Mayfield remains slippery, thought he was taking off, but finds Godwin to move the chains.

Mayfield, slippery, again, fires another pass under duress for a first down. First-and-10 at Detroit’s 41-yard line — break in coverage, Mayfield hits Godwin in stride, who takes it 41 yards to the house. Bucs 13, Lions 6

Terrion Arnold is questionable to return with a finger injury (quickly returned, he’s back in there)

Lions open second-and-4 on Tampa’s 22-yard line

Friendly mark moves the chains, personally thought Gibbs juked himself out of a first down, but they give it to the Lions First-and-10 at Tampa’s 18-yard line — no gain for Gibbs. Third-and-10, Goff tried to get Jamo, but no go on that one. Clean coverage, some pressure breaking through. Screen to Gibbs doesn’t do much, looking at another field goal. Bates from 35 yards is good. Lions 6, Bucs 6

First quarter

4:36 — Detroit Lions drive starts on own 16

Offense facing a third-and-1 here, need to limit those three-and-outs. Goff finds old-reliable Amon-Ra St. Brown on a slant to move the chains, and the Sun God made the 15-yard play while eating a defensive hold in the secondary.

First-and-10 up at the 40-yard line — another first-down pass to St. Brown, Goff was running out of the pocket, found his receiver along the sideline. St. Brown and Goff are cooking with fire on this drive, another big-time connection makes it first-and-10 at Tampa’s 28-yard line. St. Brown already exceeded last week’s numbers in the first quarter, up to four catches for 41 yards.

7:13 — Tampa Bay Buccaneers drive starts on own 30

Mike Evans loses control and the ball hits the turf, nice job coming downhill by Kerby Joseph. Mayfield looked dead to rights in the backfield, but he wiggled free and picked up an impressive gain to move the chains. First-and-10 at the 42-yard line. Nice coverage by Amik Robertson to make it third-and-8, great job making that throw to the sideline even more difficult.

Aidan Hutchinson has three sacks in the first quarter. He’s eating everything they throw at him. Bucs to punt.

Bucs starting RB Rachaad White is questionable to return with a groin injury.

8:55 — Detroit Lions drive starts on own 30

Jameson Williams 55 yards down the field, just like that. Lions first-and-10 at Tampa’s 20-yard line. First-and-goal at the 10-yard line after some clear roughing the passer on Goff getting out of the pocket. Second-and-goal after Goff throws a one-hopper in the face of pressure. Third-and-goal after strong run by Montgomery, but Goff’s pass sails out of bounds. Fourth-and-goal at the 4-yard line, and kicking team comes out. Bucs 6, Lions 3

11:20 — Tampa Bay Buccaneers drive starts on Detroit’s 44

Crowd forces a false start. Second-and-11 — Hutchinson gets his second sack. He has three through the first three quarters. Screen to Godwin nearly moves the chains, whew, it’s fourth-and-3 at Detroit’s 37-yard line. Looks like Tampa will try for another field goal. Long 55-yard kick is good. Bucs 6, Lions 0

11:31 — Detroit Lions drive starts on own 30

David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs both on the field with this first play, the latter out wide and former in the gun. And, well, Jared Goff over the middle, too high, it’s intercepted by Zyon McCollum. Crowd is angry, Jameson Williams ate some contact on that one for sure, replay made it look like some laundry should be on the field, but alas, TB takes over

15:00 – Tampa Bay Buccaneers drive starts on own 30

Those of you who read my depth chart preview this morning, look at that, there is Levi Onwuzurike starting at defensive end. Derrick Barnes all over the quick pass to Chris Godwin on the first play of the game. Barnes thriving at SAM.

Great throw by Baker Mayfield over the head of the defensive and over the middle, 14 yards to Godwin. First-and-10 at the 49-yard line, just short of midfield. Rachaad White takes Tampa into Detroit’s side of the field with a 5-yard run. White wasn’t able to get much going last week, and the Lions remained great against the run.

Mayfield tests Terrion Arnold deep, and the officials hit the rookie with his third defensive pass interference call in five quarters. Too much hands on that one, including what looked to be a couple fingers to the facemask, probably should have been illegal touching over interference, in my opinion.

Great PBU by Brian Branch on Cade Otton in the end zone. Got his hand up at the exact right moment — third-and-goal at the 3-yard line after that. Mayfield is sacked (Hutchinson), loses the ball and the defense makes a goal-line stand to hold TB to the field-goal attempt. It’s good. Bucs 3, Lions 0

Tampa Bay will receive after the Lions win the toss and defer.

Pregame

Glorious uniform matchup today in my opinion. Classic home look is strong for the Lions, and these Bucs’ uniforms are their best, with all due respect, love and appreciation to the Creamsicles.

Lions inactives: Marcus Davenport, Isaiah Williams, Colby Sorsdal, Giovanni Manu, Trevor Nowaske, Ennis Rakestraw, Ifeatu Melifonwu

James Houston, Jameson Williams and Penei Sewell are good to go.

“I think (first-year Bucs offensive coordinator Liam) Coen’s doing a good job over there, just what they’ve asked them to do,” Lions head coach Dan Campbell said. “Certainly, Evans is a headache. Offensive line is improved, and they’ve got the backs. They’ve got a little bit of everything and then when you have Baker, who can facilitate it and run the show, it makes for a pretty efficient offense.

“This is going to be a good test for us. It’s going to be a really good test.”
