“Miami Vice” turns 40 – here you can drink cocktails in his honor

Miami as a city is very proud of its identity, be it our eternal summer vibe, our ever-evolving food scene, our “Cocaine Cowboy” era, and even our years-long presence on the legendary television show MiamiVice.

The crime drama, starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as undercover cops, was revolutionary in its use of pop culture, style, music and impact on Miami's identity. The series premiered on NBC on September 16, 1984 and ran for five seasons, ending with an infamous wrap party at Mac's Club Deuce (Miami's oldest dive bar).

As the beloved show celebrates its 40th anniversary, what better way to celebrate (and cool off in the still insanely hot summer temperatures) than with a refreshing Miami Vice cocktail.

Although this delicious cocktail has nothing to do with the show—it was probably created before the show even aired—it's a perfect way to celebrate 40 years. A Miami Vice is basically a mix of a piña colada and a strawberry daiquiri. The drink originated in Miami—hence the name—and is typically available at beach and poolside bars. Today, however, many cocktail bars and restaurants have gotten creative and serve a non-frozen, jazzed-up version of the classic that's just as good, if not better.

This is no ordinary Miami Vice, but an upscale, modern take on the popular cocktail. “It's almost like a secret menu item at Eating House,” says Giorgio Rapicavoli, co-owner and executive chef at Eating House. “Our bar manager, Jordan Nance, made a variation of our Mr. Pink cocktail and calls it Mrs. Pink. It's a mix of Havana Club rum, lime juice, coconut liqueur and a wild strawberry liqueur called Fragola.”

If you're looking for the classic version, head to the Clevelander Hotel, where this is one of the most popular poolside drinks. In honor of the show's anniversary, they'll even be serving frozen Miami Vice Frozen for just $10.

Miami Vice Negroni at Santa Diabla in Miami Lakes

Head to Santa Diabla, the speakeasy at Chela's Cocteleria in Miami Lakes, for a fun twist on the fruity cocktail – in the form of a Negroni. This Miami Vice Negroni features pineapple-infused Canaima Gin, strawberry jam macerated in Campari, and sweet Vermouth di Torino washed with coconut oil. It's part of a pop-up tiki retreat called Diabla's Cove.

Frozen layers of piña colada and strawberry daiquiri are perfectly blended together for a sweet, refreshing treat under the Miami sun. Another delicious twist on the classic Miami Vice. Dom's makes their version with Havana Club Añejo Classico Blanco, strawberry, pineapple juice and coconut water. This very drinkable version is light and refreshing and makes for a nice start to the evening.

This version of the frozen drink is very similar to the classic, but with a slightly stronger South Florida twist. Instead of the usual piña colada and strawberry daiquiri, Monty's Raw Bar swaps out the daiquiri for a Rum Runner. Don't know a Rum Runner? It's a cocktail created in the Florida Keys – Islamorada's Tiki Bar, to be precise – and consists of light and dark rum, blackberry and banana liqueur, fresh pineapple and orange juice, and 151-proof rum. This version is frozen and topped with the frozen piña colada, just like the original Miami Vice.
