Emmy predictions 2024: Best talk series

The current Emmy lineup for best talk show series is almost exactly the same as last year's, with the main difference being the elimination of one nomination slot, which coincided with the elimination of the long-cancelled “The Problem with Jon Stewart.” As luck would have it, that show's title host still managed to secure a spot as executive producer of “The Daily Show,” which is now widely predicted to win its second consecutive (and 13th overall) nod.

The challengers to the talk series “The Daily Show” include “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” for the seventh year in a row, with the former being nominated annually since 2015, the year in which talk and sketch programs were first listed in separate categories. Rounding out the list is “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” which had its breakthrough here in 2022.

To determine the true likelihood of The Daily Show retaining its title, we're taking a closer look at each nominee. Submit your predictions in this and 24 other Primetime Emmy categories by September 15.

“The Daily Show” (Comedy Central)

This February – 14 months after Trevor Noah resigned as sole host of “The Daily Show” – 1999-2015 Star Jon Stewart returned to share the moderation duties with long-time correspondents Ronny Chieng, Jordan Klepper, Michael Kosta, Desi PoetryAnd Dulce SloanBy the registration deadline for the 76th Emmys on May 31, more than 50 episodes had already been broadcast in the new format, mainly dealing with the 2024 US presidential election.

“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” (ABC)

The oldest show in the series (only the most recent episode is counted) celebrated its 21st anniversary in January. Kimmel not only often poked fun at the election himself, but also welcomed hundreds of guests between September and May, including Martin Scorsese, Snoop Dogg, Carol BurnettAnd Kim Kardashian.

“Late Night with Seth Meyers” (NBC)

Now in its eleventh year, this fourth NBC late-night series (which follows “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” from 2009 to 2014) stars the former “Saturday Night Live” cast member and head writer, and features a house band led by his former “SNL” colleague, Fred ArmisenHis guests for 2023-2024 included Werner Herzog, Ralph Lauren, Morgan FreemanAnd Kurt And Wyatt Russell.

“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” (CBS)

Colbert has now hosted this institutional series for nine full seasons, after originally replacing the retired star David LettermanHe had spent the previous decade hosting Comedy Central's twice Best Variety Series award-winning news show “The Colbert Report,” which, remarkably, had evolved from Stewart's first version of “The Daily Show.”

So what will win the 2024 Emmy for best talk show? Although a host change could hamper other programs at the awards show, “The Daily Show” will benefit greatly, having previously won 11 series awards with Stewart at the desk. Moreover, in 2023, with no winner in the “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” category, it already speaks volumes that voters have opted to award the first specific Emmy for best talk show to the Comedy Central show over more traditional options.

Last year, only 14% of Gold Derby's Emmy prognosticators understood that the Television Academy wouldn't do a network talk show, but most chose the wrong alternative: Less than a quarter of the subgroup ultimately voted for “The Daily Show” over “The Problem with Jon Stewart.” Now that the titleholder has proven himself and Stewart is back on board, there seems to be nothing that can stop the hit series.
